How we report, and how we correct

Every Swamp Watch receipt rests on a record you can check. This page explains where our facts come from, how we verify them, and what we do when we get something wrong.

Sourcing

A receipt has three parts: the money, the payoff, and the source. If one is missing, we do not publish.

  • Primary records first. Federal Election Commission and state campaign finance filings, super PAC reports, financial disclosures, legislative roll calls, contract records, court documents, and inspector general and congressional reports.
  • Credited reporting. When a story builds on another outlet's work, we link to it in the first reply to the post and credit it by name.
  • One link, every time. Each receipt on this site shows its source link, and where possible a crop of the source page with the key passage boxed in red.

Verification

  • We read the source, not just the headline, and quote figures the way the record states them.
  • Where a figure is a range, an estimate, or a pledge rather than a payment, we say so. Financial disclosures report values in ranges, so we write "up to" when that is all the record shows.
  • We check names, titles, dates, and amounts against a second record when one exists.
  • We describe allegations as allegations until a court, an agency, or the subject confirms them.

Language and fairness

We apply the same questions to every officeholder, whatever their party. We set what officials say beside what the record shows, and we let the documents carry the weight.

Corrections policy

If we get something wrong, we correct it publicly, on the platform where it ran, and say what changed. Corrections to receipts collected on this site are listed in the log below with the date and the change.

Independence

Swamp Watch does not take money from the politicians or campaigns we cover, and we do not run fundraising appeals.

Photographs on this site are real. Most are official government portraits and other public domain images; a few are published under Creative Commons licences, linked below. All come from Wikimedia Commons and were cropped, converted to black and white, and printed as halftones by Swamp Watch. Images under a ShareAlike licence remain available under that licence. Where we could not find a freely licensed portrait, we show initials instead. We never use AI-generated images of real places or people.
