Campaign finance and super PACs

Campaign finance is the money that pays for American elections: contributions to candidates, which federal law caps, and spending by super PACs, which it does not. The largest checks now go to super PACs, which can take unlimited sums from individuals, corporations, and unions as long as they do not coordinate with a candidate.

Swamp Watch tracks the biggest donors and the committees that take their money, then looks at what those donors want from government. Our reporting draws on Federal Election Commission filings, state campaign finance reports, and trackers such as OpenSecrets.
